When tragedy strikes the Steele Family Farm at harvest time, tearful Maggie finds herself grinding the gears of the giant grain truck, trying her best to replace her big brother, Alex, who died in a fiery car crash. If Maggie is going to escape her worst nightmare (being stuck on the farm forever), she’ll need to ignore small-town haters, brave painful setbacks, and defy the heavy pull of gravity itself. As the pole-vault crossbar is raised dangerously higher, her future is quite literally up in the air. Taking cues from the voice within, Maggie bravely launches herself skyward. When the bar is raised to a record-setting height at the state championship meet, can she find the courage it takes to soar into a brighter future of her own making?

Chick Lit Book Café’s review:

Maggie Vaults Over the Moon is an incredible tale of a seventeen-year-old’s strength and triumph after tragedy and loss. After reading this new inspirational book by Grant Overstake, you’ll want to grab a pole and jump high, even over the moon—just like Maggie.

Maggie is a farm girl in the middle of “Nowhere,” Kansas. Everything is simple…until it’s not. When her boyfriend and brother get into a wreck after a night out at the movies, Maggie is lost. How can you make sense of anything when an accident like this happens? Maggie doesn’t know, but she goes through the motions. Then one day in the barn, her deceased brother speaks to her. He coaches her on how to pole vault, and Maggie finds a spark ignite within herself that pushes her to do things she never knew she was capable of.

This is a truly astounding, perceptive, and thoughtfully written book for teens, young adults and even adult readers. It’s far from being just a sports story; in fact, it doesn’t even mention pole vaulting until one third into the book. Grant Overstake puts a lot of focus on understanding Maggie, who she is, and what she cares about. It’s a story of great loss but also great hope. He perfectly captures the essence of what it takes to persevere. The forward is even written by Greek pole-vaulting Olympian Katerina Stefanidi, whose own story has its difficulties. There are also perceptive questions after each chapter for the reader to reflect on.

An incredible story of inspiration about how a small-town girl makes it big, Maggie Vaults Over the Moon really strikes the hearts of those who read it. It’s a memorable treasure that you don’t want to miss! Book read and reviewed by Micah Giordonela for Chick Lit Book Cafe..
