Monsters are invading – demons, gargoyles, and gremlins . . . oh my!

Cameron Poole has a problem, a big problem: he’s a bully magnet who struggles with anxiety. Being the smallest sixth-grader at his summer camp, everything around him triggers his everyday struggles with anxiety, or with his Beast, making it impossible for him to do the same things other kids can do. In a constant state of worry, Cameron feels like a perpetual failure, his self esteem crushed. That’s bad enough, but when Cameron learns that mythical monsters are trying to invade his camp, things go from bad to worse.

Malphas, the Demon Lord from a parallel world called Agartha, wants to bring mythical creatures from his world to form a monster army, attack Camp Pontchartrain, and begin his invasion. But before he can bring the biggest and most ferocious monsters to Earth, he must find the seven Skull Keys that will keep the gateway between worlds open forever.

Against all logic, Cameron is chosen to lead an unusual collection of kids to stop Malphas from finding the Skull Keys. But the Demon Lord of Agartha has other plans. He sends mythical creatures to Earth, gremlins, imps, gargoyles . . . to find the keys and destroy anyone in their way.

To stop the Malphas and his monster army from getting all the Skull Keys, Cameron must face his deepest fears while trying to keep his friends safe. But when he learns Malphas’s real plan, Cameron’s blood runs cold with fear.

Can Cameron control his anxiety and confront his Beast while battling an army of minotaurs, banshees, ghouls, golems, and other nightmarish monsters?

Buckle up and get ready for a thrilling adventure!

Chick Lit Book Café book review:

Driven by its authentic and relatable main character, Facing the Beast Within: The Anxiety of Cameron Poole by Mark Cheverton is a middle-grade fantasy novel that explores practical strategies for dealing with anxiety. It follows an adventure-filled story involving an evil demon ruler and a ragtag team of middle-graders who work together to stop him and his minions.

At Camp Pontchartrain, Cameron and other techies have been at the bottom of the social ladder and become easy targets for the more popular bullies. Unlike his friend, Bobby, who seems unfazed by the bullies’ demeaning actions and comments, Cameron struggles with anxiety and constant fear. Though his other friend, Elisa, cheers him on as he tackles the rope ladder, the possibility of failing plagues his mind and he gives up. Soon after, Cameron spots a red-colored monster with stout horns and learns about Earth’s parallel world and the portal that opens to this demon-ruled planet.

Cheverton masterfully transforms the story into a spine-chilling adventure involving Cameron’s team and the horde of monsters they need to fight before they take over the earth. Fascinating elements are blended into the novel such as a portal at the camp that links the two planets and the interactions between the characters and the other-worldly creatures in the story. The characters are brilliantly crafted, and they face familiar internal and external struggles. They grow during their fight against Earth’s possible invasion and surprising friendships emerge.

The book offers vivid descriptions of Cameron’s challenges with self-confidence and fear and offers a deft examination of the crippling thoughts and reactions faced by those who struggle with anxiety. When he encounters the bullies at camp and, later, the monsters from planet Agartha, Cameron’s heartbeat pounds in his ears and sweat covers his arms. The descriptions will help readers understand the effects of anxiety disorders. Cameron’s struggle with anxiety will resonate with young readers who face similar challenges.

Cheverton adeptly threads helpful strategies for coping with anxiety throughout the story. As Cameron faces frightening events, he remembers his therapist’s advice about ignoring negative thoughts and using breathing techniques to dispel fear. The strategies offered are accessible to young readers and the story shows that it is possible not to let anxiety rule over one’s life.

Equal parts educative, empowering, and thrilling, Facing the Beast Within: The Anxiety of Cameron Poole by Mark Cheverton includes useful suggestions for managing fear through its outstanding characters and their riveting adventures. It is an amazing start to The Order of the Stones series and comes highly recommended by Chick Lit Book Café. Book reviewed by Edith Emunah.
